1. What are the benefits of choosing a wood counter-top over laminate?
A wood counter-top adds a classic and warm touch to any kitchen with its natural and fresh appearance. This gives your space its unique character, especially when contrasted against the materials of your appliances. However, one of the main benefits is attributed to its durability. Wood counter-tops stand the test of time and can easily be cleaned and resurfaced to look polished once again, especially after being worn down with scratches or water damages. If choosing a wood counter-top, keep in mind that maintenance is required to keep it looking new in the years to come. This includes frequent surface oiling to preserve the wood and keep it from getting dry, and therefore helping to prevent further damage. Wood counter-tops are truly the best choice for any homeowner; they require minimal upkeep and make a practical addition to any space – big or small.
2. How long does it typically take to build a custom counter-top? How far in advance should I be placing my order?
We work hard to get you your counter-top as quickly as possible, however, a few factors play into how long it actually takes to manufacture such as: availability, size, and style. It can take anywhere from 2-3 weeks (approx.) to have your custom-built counter-top ready. For a more detailed timeline based on your requirements, please fill out our Custom Order form or contact us to speak with one of our representatives who would be glad to help you out.
3. What is the difference between buying an already-made counter-top in-store vs. having one custom built?
Choosing to get a custom built counter-top vs purchasing a generic one at a store is dependent on what you are looking for. Getting one custom built provides you with better options based on the quality and source of the materials being used, along with the workmanship that goes into your order by shopping locally. There is a lot of care that goes into each custom-built counter-top to ensure it meets your expectations, and that is something to strongly consider when deciding how to purchase. As a customer, you’re able to work one-on-one with the company to browse what’s available, choose a slab that best appeals to you, and get to choose the colors and textures for the final product.
4. I’ve heard that butcher blocks can be ruined by heat. Is this true?
Many surfaces can easily be ruined upon placement of hot items, and while butcher blocks are not much different, they can definitely withstand the occasional heat better than other materials. If you’re worried about a heat ring ruining your butcher block, you can prevent this by using a cooling rack to place hot items on. If damage has already been done, sanding down existing rings often helps in getting rid of the scorch marks.
5. Does a solid wood counter-top require more maintenance?
Like any counter-top, you want to enforce preventative measures to ensure that it lasts a lifetime. Wood counter-tops are easy to care for, but they do require a bit of upkeep. This includes re- oiling of the counter-top (including ends and edges) to seal the wood and preserve it against any damages. It is important to refrain from using any harsh chemicals on your wood counter-top, unless other wise directed. Soap and water is sufficient enough for clean up or to treat stains.
